The 4th International Leprosy Congress (Congrès International de la Lèpre) was held in Cairo in March 1938, gathering leading medical scientists, leprologists, and public health officials from around the world. At a time before modern multidrug therapy existed, the global medical community focused heavily on clinical research, early diagnosis, specialized sanatorium care, and botanical treatments such as chaulmoogra oil derived from the seeds of Hydnocarpus trees. Hosting the conference provided a vital platform for sharing therapeutic strategies and organizing coordinated international efforts against Hansen's disease.
To commemorate hosting this landmark medical summit, the Egyptian postal administration issued a dedicated commemorative stamp series in March 1938.
