Sphinx in front of Cheops pyramid - 20 para
This stamp captures the definitive transition of Egypt’s postal identity toward a celebration of its monumental Pharaonic heritage, moving away from purely calligraphic or geometric designs. The central illustration features the Great Sphinx of Giza set against the backdrop of a pyramid, flanked by two iconic landmarks that represent Egypt's Greco-Roman and ancient periods: Pompey's Pillar of Alexandria on the left and Cleopatra's Needle on the right. This powerful convergence of symbols serves as a message of historical continuity and national pride, positioning Egypt as a land of timeless wonders and a cradle of civilization. Historically, this theme reflects the era of the Khedivate's efforts to present a modern, sovereign Egypt to the international community through its most recognizable archeological treasures, using the postal service as a medium to promote the country’s unique cultural identity and its foundational role in world history.
